Bollywood star Aamir Khan’s sports comedy-drama ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ is finally arriving on an OTT platform. Nearly a year after its theatrical release in June 2025, the film is set to stream on SonyLIV, giving audiences another chance to watch the emotional story from home.
The movie had a unique digital journey before this announcement. Instead of releasing it directly on an OTT platform, Aamir Khan first experimented with a YouTube pay-per-view model through his own channel. Viewers could watch the film by paying around Rs 100 per view, which made it accessible to people who preferred a low-cost option.
Aamir Khan’s Unique YouTube Release Strategy
Aamir Khan, who also produced the film under his banner, explained that the YouTube release was part of a new idea for film distribution. Rather than accepting large deals from streaming platforms, he wanted to try a model where the audience pays directly to watch the film.
He described the idea as creating a “private cinema chain” in every viewer’s home. With this approach, the film could reach people on their phones, laptops, or TVs without depending only on theatres or traditional OTT deals. The experiment attracted attention because it was one of the first times a major Hindi film star attempted such a distribution method.
SonyLIV to Premiere the Film on Streaming
Now the film is moving to SonyLIV, where it will be available to subscribers of the platform. The streaming service highlighted that this release is important because ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ will become the first Hindi theatrical film to premiere directly on SonyLIV after its theatrical run.
With the OTT release, the film is expected to reach a wider audience who may have missed it in theatres or during its YouTube pay-per-view phase.
Story of ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’
‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ is the official Hindi remake of the Spanish film ‘Champions.’ The story follows Gulshan Arora, played by Aamir Khan, who works as the assistant coach of a professional basketball team.
After losing his job, Gulshan’s life takes an unexpected turn when he gets involved in a drunk-driving incident that leads to a court case. As part of the consequences, he is asked to coach a team of specially-abled players. What begins as a punishment slowly changes his perspective on life, relationships, and empathy. The film mixes sports, humor, and emotional moments, focusing on teamwork and personal growth.

Cast and Direction
Along with Aamir Khan, the film features Genelia Deshmukh in an important role. The supporting cast includes Ashish Pendse, Aroush Datta, Aayush Bhansali, Rishi Shahani, Gopikrishnan K Varma, Rishabh Jain, Vedant Sharma, Simran Mangeshkar, Samvit Desai, and Naman Misra.
The movie is directed by R. S. Prasanna, known for his work in emotional and character-driven stories.
Box Office Success of the Film
When ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ released in theatres in June 2025, it performed strongly at the box office. The film earned more than Rs 250 crore worldwide, making it one of the successful Hindi releases of the year.
With its upcoming SonyLIV OTT release, the film is expected to find a new audience and continue its journey beyond theatres and YouTube.
