Bollywood Classic ‘Tere Naam’ Re-Releases After 23 Years, Hero’s Hairstyle Becomes Iconic

One of Bollywood’s most emotional love stories is coming back to theatres. The 2003 romantic tragedy Tere Naam is set to re-release on February 27, 2026, as part of PVR-INOX’s Month of Love campaign. Even after more than two decades, the film continues to be remembered for its intense romance, heartbreaking plot, and iconic look of the lead actor, Salman Khan.

Story of Radhe and the Tragic Romance

Tere Naam tells the story of Radhe, a reckless yet deeply emotional young man. He is carefree, aggressive, and spends most of his time roaming with friends and getting into fights. But beneath this tough exterior lies a sensitive heart. When he falls in love with a soft-spoken and simple girl, his life changes completely.

The romance is passionate but takes a tragic turn, showing separation, mental breakdown, and loss. The story highlights the dark side of love, something Bollywood had not explored deeply at the time. This is what made the film stand out from other love stories released in the early 2000s.

From Tamil Hit ‘Sethu’ to Hindi Blockbuster

The film was the official Hindi remake of the Tamil hit Sethu, directed by Bala. Interestingly, the original story was inspired by a real-life incident. While remakes sometimes fail to create the same impact, Tere Naam managed to strike a deeper chord with North Indian audiences. Its raw emotional storytelling and intense performances helped it become a cult classic over time.

Cultural Impact and Iconic Hairstyle

Apart from the story, Salman Khan’s look in the film became a national trend. His long, middle-parted hairstyle was copied by thousands of young men across cities and small towns. Dialogues from the film entered everyday conversations, and scenes like the tragic asylum sequence left viewers in tears.

The music of Tere Naam, composed by Himesh Reshammiya, was another major factor in its success. Songs like Lagan Lagi, Tera Naam, Odhni, and Tumse Milna were played on repeat across radio stations and music channels. Even today, the tracks bring back nostalgia for many fans.

Financial Success and Relevance Today

Made on a budget of around ₹10 crore, the film earned approximately ₹14.53 crore net in India and over ₹24 crore worldwide. While it did not cross the ₹20 crore net benchmark for a clean hit, it was still considered profitable. More importantly, the film established Salman Khan as a bankable star capable of portraying intense, emotional roles convincingly.

Now, 23 years later, the re-release of Tere Naam aims to bring the magic of Radhe’s tragic love story to a new generation. Trade analysts suggest that even a modest collection of ₹5.5 crore would be a strong performance today, proving that some love stories never lose their charm.
