Prithviraj Sukumaran is all set to impress audiences with his upcoming role in SS Rajamouli’s epic film Varanasi. The actor will play the primary antagonist, Kumbha, a character described as layered and highly complex.
Challenges Of Playing Kumbha
In a recent interview, Prithviraj shared that portraying Kumbha was a unique creative challenge. The character is wheelchair-bound and has restricted physical movement, which meant Prithviraj had to convey all emotions using just his face and eyes.
He explained, “None of Kumbha’s emotions is one-dimensional. Everything he does and says carries a great deal of weight from his past, with layers of subtext beneath every line. That complexity is what makes the character so compelling for me, and that is what truly excited me as an actor.”
Prithviraj also said that working with limitations made him focus more on subtle expressions, showing that acting is not always about body movements but also about nuanced facial expressions.
Working With SS Rajamouli
The actor expressed his admiration for director SS Rajamouli’s meticulous filmmaking. He said, “I also feel privileged to work with a director who is so clear and laser-focused on how each character should appear on screen. Having such a clutter-free creative surrounding is a blessing for an actor.”
Prithviraj added that Rajamouli’s detailed approach allows actors to fully explore the depth of their characters. He called Kumbha one of the most complex roles he has ever played and highlighted the layered writing that elevates the antagonist beyond the usual stereotypes.
