Amaal Malik reveals tough fight to bring Sonu Nigam’s voice to Mere Dolna 3.0 in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3

Composer Amaal Malik has finally spoken about the difficult journey behind one of the most talked-about songs from Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 — ‘Mere Dolna 3.0’, sung by Sonu Nigam. While the song has been widely praised for its classical depth and emotional power, Amaal revealed that getting Sonu Nigam on board was far from easy.

“They didn’t want Sonu Nigam.”

In a recent interview, Amaal Malik shared his disappointment over how even a legendary singer like Sonu Nigam faced hesitation from within the industry. He admitted that several people involved in the project were unsure about Sonu Nigam being the right choice for the song.

Amaal said that he found it hard to believe that someone as accomplished as Sonu Nigam was being questioned for a classical track like Mere Dolna 3.0. He pointed out that decisions in Bollywood music are often influenced by too many opinions, leaving composers with very little freedom.

Too many voices are controlling one song

Talking about the system, Amaal Malik explained that music decisions are rarely left to the composer alone. Label representatives, producers, directors, actors, marketing teams, managers, and even choreographers often give their suggestions. He shared that sometimes, he does not even have full control over choosing the singer for his own composition.

According to Amaal, if everyone focused only on their own role, the creative process would be much smoother. Instead, excessive interference often makes things complicated and stressful for musicians.

Arijit Singh and Vishal Mishra were considered

Amaal Malik revealed that Arijit Singh and Vishal Mishra were also discussed as possible singers for the song. Arijit Singh was the first choice since he had sung the earlier version of Mere Dolna. However, Arijit politely declined, saying he had already done it before.

Vishal Mishra also stepped back from the project, stating that since Arijit had already been associated with the song, he did not wish to take it forward. Amaal said he was looking for a bolder and more classical voice, which eventually led him back to Sonu Nigam.

Why Sonu Nigam was the perfect choice

Amaal firmly believed that only Sonu Nigam could truly do justice to Mere Dolna 3.0. He described Sonu Nigam as one of the finest classical voices in the country and felt that the song needed that level of experience and control.

The composer also shared that the song was extremely challenging, as it involved reworking Pritam’s original composition while adding new elements. Despite the complexity, Sonu Nigam recorded the entire song in just 45 minutes, leaving everyone impressed.

Almost removed from the film

One of the most shocking revelations made by Amaal was that his insistence on Sonu Nigam nearly cost him the project. He said that before the song was finalized, there were serious discussions about removing him from the film altogether.

However, once the song was released and received appreciation, the same people who doubted the decision praised Sonu Nigam’s performance. Amaal concluded by saying that sometimes, one strong creative decision can change everything.

A song that proved its worth

Today, Mere Dolna 3.0 stands as one of the highlights of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. Amaal Malik’s story sheds light on the unseen struggles behind creating music in Bollywood and reminds everyone that talent, when trusted, always finds its way to shine.
