Rani Mukerji has returned to the big screen with Mardaani 3, the latest chapter in her popular crime thriller franchise. The film released in cinemas on January 31 and marks Rani’s comeback to theatres after the success of Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway. While expectations were high, Mardaani 3 has opened with a moderate but respectable first-day box office collection.
Rani Mukerji Reprises Her Powerful Role
In Mardaani 3, Rani once again steps into the role of fearless police officer Shivani Shivaji Roy. The character has become one of the most recognisable female cop roles in Hindi cinema. This time too, the story focuses on a serious crime case that highlights issues like sexism, patriarchy, and abuse of power in society.
Rani’s performance remains the backbone of the film. She brings intensity, emotional depth, and strength to the role, which has been appreciated by audiences who enjoy content-driven cinema.
Mardaani 3 Box Office Day 1 Collection Details
On its opening day, Mardaani 3 collected around Rs 3.8 crore at the Indian box office. The film was screened in approximately 2,345 shows across the country. Overall occupancy on day one stood at 18.01%, which shows a slow but steady turnout.
Morning shows began with lower occupancy of around 8.97%, which gradually improved during the day. Afternoon shows saw 14.78% occupancy, while evening shows recorded 17.13%. The strongest response came during night shows, which touched 31.14%, indicating better footfall later in the day.

Strong Performance In Mumbai And Delhi-NCR
Among major cities, Delhi-NCR had the highest number of screenings with 526 shows, registering an occupancy of 18.75%. Mumbai, however, showed stronger audience interest with 381 shows and a higher occupancy of 26.75%. These numbers suggest that metro audiences are responding positively to the film, especially during evening and night shows.
Comparison With Previous Films
Mardaani 3 has matched the opening-day collection of Mardaani 2, which had also earned Rs 3.8 crore when it released in 2019. This makes the third instalment a stable continuation of the franchise in terms of box office performance.

The film has also performed better than several of Rani Mukerji’s recent releases. Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway earned Rs 1.27 crore on its first day, Bunty Aur Babli 2 collected Rs 2.8 crore, and Hichki opened at Rs 3.3 crore. In that sense, Mardaani 3 has shown improvement.
Competition From Border 2
One major challenge for Mardaani 3 is the strong presence of Border 2, which continues to dominate cinemas. The Sunny Deol starrer is still running on nearly 5,000 screens nationwide. On its eighth day, Border 2 earned around Rs 11 crore, which is significantly higher than Mardaani 3’s opening-day figure.
Due to this, Mardaani 3 has received a comparatively limited release despite being backed by Yash Raj Films.
How It Stands Among Female-Led Films
Compared to other female-led films in the same space, Mardaani 3 has performed better than The Buckingham Murders starring Kareena Kapoor, which opened at Rs 1.15 crore, and Yami Gautam’s Haq, which earned Rs 1.75 crore on day one.
However, it falls behind Yami Gautam’s Article 370, which opened at Rs 5.9 crore, and Alia Bhatt’s Jigra, which collected Rs 4.25 crore on its first day.
While the opening numbers are moderate, Mardaani 3 has the potential to grow over the weekend if word-of-mouth remains positive. The film appeals to audiences who prefer serious, message-driven stories with strong performances. All eyes are now on how the film performs in the coming days.
