Bollywood actress Sonam Bajwa has taken on an emotional and historic role in the recently released film Border 2. In the movie, she plays Manjit Kaur, the young wife of late Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, who became a war widow shortly after marriage. The film, released on January 23, 2026, tells the story of bravery, sacrifice, and love during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971.
Sonam Bajwa’s Connection to the Role
Sonam shared that she grew up watching the original Border movie directed by J.P. Dutta and has many cherished memories of it. When director Anurag Singh, with whom she had previously worked in Super Singh (2017), approached her for Border 2, she immediately felt it was a dream project. Anurag told her that she was the first person who came to his mind for the role of Manjit Kaur, making the opportunity even more special for the actress.
Who Was Manjit Kaur?
Manjit Kaur was married to Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon in February 1971. The wedding took place in Ludhiana and reflected her simple, traditional Punjabi upbringing. Tragically, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon was martyred during the Indo-Pakistan War within 10 months of their marriage, leaving Manjit a widow at a very young age. She did not have any children with him and later remarried.
Sonam Bajwa’s portrayal captures the personal cost of war on families, especially the wives of brave soldiers. By playing Manjit, Sonam highlights the life of a young woman who endured loss, grief, and the challenges of becoming a widow at an early age, while still maintaining courage and dignity.
