In Episode 5, titled The Wrangler, Cooper Howard experiences a moment when he feels he has “nothing left” and cannot control his surroundings. Goggins said that on the day they filmed this scene, he had only three hours of sleep and felt entirely exhausted. He said this real-life fatigue made him more connected to his character, and the experience helped improve his performance on screen.

Goggins added that his depletion wasn’t just useful for one scene. The emotional and physical exhaustion he carried into filming affected the entire Season 2 of Fallout. He described feeling “splayed open emotionally,” which aligned with the struggles and intensity required for his roles as both Cooper Howard and The Ghoul. According to Goggins, this helped him portray the depth and vulnerability of his character authentically.

The actor also shared a personal connection to one of Cooper Howard’s storylines. In Season 2, his character deeply misses his child, and Goggins himself was feeling similar emotions while filming. He admitted that being away from his own child caused him shame and sadness, which he channeled into his performance. Goggins said that expressing these emotions in front of the crew and cameras was cathartic, even though it made everyone on set uncomfortable.
