George R.R. Martin, the creator of Game of Thrones, has hinted that more stories from the Westeros universe may be coming in the future. This comes as fans prepare for the premiere of the new HBO Max prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which launches on January 18. Martin shared these thoughts while speaking on a companion podcast for the show, where he discussed his love for the characters Dunk and Egg and the many untold stories still left in their journey.
George R.R. Martin Hints at More Game of Thrones Stories
In the podcast, Martin said there are “more stories to tell” about Dunk and Egg, especially about their growth and what happens to them later in life. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on The Hedge Knight, one of Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas. He explained that writing these shorter stories was one of the best decisions of his career, as it allowed him to focus on a smaller, more personal story instead of a massive fantasy world filled with many viewpoints.
Unlike Game of Thrones, which followed many characters at the same time, the new series tells the story from a single point of view. The show follows Sir Duncan the Tall, also known as Dunk, and his young squire Egg as they travel through Westeros. This approach creates a simpler and more emotional story. Martin said focusing on one character can be very powerful and allows viewers to connect more deeply with the people on screen.
Another key difference in the prequel is its focus on everyday people rather than kings and queens. Martin explained that he wanted to show the lives of “small folk,” people who have no chance of ruling the Iron Throne. The series presents a more realistic picture of knighthood, showing that knights were often soldiers serving their lords rather than perfect heroes protecting the weak.

The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will have six episodes and stars Peter Claffey as Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg. The show has already been renewed for a second season, showing HBO’s confidence in the series. With Martin teasing even more stories in the future, fans of Game of Thrones have much to look forward to.
