Singapore DJ and actor Dennis Chew has taken a big step in his personal journey by enrolling in a university course at the age of 52. On January 12, 2026, he officially began his undergraduate studies at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). Dennis is studying part-time for a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies, showing that learning has no age limit. He shared that returning to school is both exciting and challenging, but it is something he has always wanted to do.
Dennis Chew Begins Chinese Studies Journey at SUSS
Dennis chose Chinese Studies because it closely connects to his work and personal interests. He explained that his Chinese language skills are stronger than his English, and he has always been deeply interested in Chinese history and literature. Many of his favourite authors are Chinese writers, and he wants to better understand the deeper meanings behind their works. For Dennis, this course feels meaningful and suitable for his career as well as his passion.
Although the degree normally takes three years to complete, Dennis hopes to graduate earlier. He recently completed a diploma in Chinese Media and Communication at Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 2025, and he expects to receive exemptions for some modules. Still, he admitted feeling nervous about the workload. University life, he believes, is much tougher than polytechnic studies, and he is unsure how demanding it will be.
As a part-time student, Dennis is taking four modules this semester. His classes run from 7pm to 10pm, four nights a week. This schedule allows him to continue working as a radio host on Love 972 in the mornings. He shared that the flexible class timing was the main reason he chose SUSS over the National University of Singapore, which did not offer a similar arrangement.
Despite a busy schedule, Dennis remains positive and motivated. He joked that while studying four modules may be tough, he believes in the saying, “Bitter first, sweetness comes later.” After attending orientation, he felt encouraged by the enthusiasm of his fellow students. Dennis’ story is a strong reminder that it is never too late to follow your dreams and continue learning.
