Eric McCormack, best known for Will & Grace, and his son Finnigan McCormack have joined forces for the second season of NBC’s thriller series The Hunting Party. They play the same character, serial killer Ron Simms, with Eric portraying the adult version and Finnigan playing the younger version. The show follows a team of investigators led by former FBI profiler Rebecca “Bex” Henderson, who hunt escaped serial killers from a secret prison known as The Pit.

The character of Ron Simms is unusual. He is socially awkward and craves connection with others, especially women. According to Eric, Simms doesn’t necessarily enjoy killing; he just wants stillness and companionship. Finnigan added that understanding the character’s mindset was challenging, as he needed to balance the creepiness of a killer with his desire for human connection. Their performances highlight the complexity of Simms’ personality and make the character both unsettling and fascinating.

The casting of father and son for the same role was suggested by the show’s producers. Eric initially worried about playing both the young and adult versions of Simms himself. When the producers suggested Finnigan, Eric immediately saw the benefit, saying it was a perfect choice. Finnigan was excited and grateful for the opportunity, describing the fast-paced casting process and the quick turnaround from audition to filming.

Working together allowed Eric and Finnigan to collaborate closely in shaping the character. They shared ideas and discoveries, creating a “through line” for Simms that connected the young and adult versions. Eric noted that the writers gave the character a transformation, showing him go from somewhat relatable and empathetic to a fully dangerous and monstrous figure. This added depth to the storytelling and kept the actors engaged in exploring the character’s psychology.
