Ahn Sung-ki, one of South Korea’s most respected and enduring actors, has passed away at the age of 74. His death was confirmed by his agency, Artist Company, and Soonchunhyang University Hospital in Seoul. Ahn had been battling blood cancer, according to reports. He had a remarkable career that spanned more than six decades and included over 130 films, making him a central figure in Korean cinema.
Veteran Korean Actor Ahn Sung-ki Dies at 74
Ahn began acting at the age of five, debuting in the 1957 film The Twilight Train. He acted in around 70 films as a child before taking a break during his teenage years. After studying Vietnamese at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, he struggled to return to acting but made a successful comeback in 1977. His adult breakthrough came in Lee Jang-ho’s Good, Windy Days (1980), which earned him the Grand Bell Award for Best New Actor.
Over the years, Ahn appeared in many landmark films, including Silmido, Radio Star, Mandara, and Whale Hunting. He was known for his calm and strong screen presence, emotional clarity, and ability to bring depth to his characters. Ahn’s performances won him five Grand Bell Awards for Best Actor, a record in South Korea. He earned the admiration of fans and critics for his consistent work and his dedication to his craft.
Besides acting, Ahn played an important role in supporting the Korean film industry. He served as chair of the Korean Film Actors Association and advocated for performers during times of change in the industry. Ahn was respected for his integrity and professionalism, maintaining a clean public image throughout his long career.
