Veteran Singer Ling Xiao Dies at 75 After Battling Kidney Failure, Stroke, and Cancer

Veteran local singer Ling Xiao, whose real name was Tan Choon Huat, passed away at the age of 75 on December 13, 2025. He died at his home in his sleep, according to his younger sister, Jeci. Ling Xiao had been struggling with multiple health problems over the past few years, including kidney failure, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and the effects of a stroke he suffered in 2022.

Ling Xiao’s health had declined significantly in recent years. He underwent kidney dialysis three times a week and was paralysed on the right side of his body after his stroke. In November 2025, he was also diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, but due to his weak heart, doctors advised against chemotherapy. His condition deteriorated quickly, and he was discharged from the hospital on November 25 because he wanted to be at home. His family said that in his final days, he was mostly unconscious and unable to eat.

Born in 1950, Ling Xiao entered the entertainment industry at the age of 17 after winning second place in a singing competition in 1967. Known for his good looks and talent, he became a popular singer in the local music scene. In the 1990s, he also pursued acting and appeared in local Chinese television series, including Right Frequency (1998) and Legend of the Eight Immortals (1998). Later in life, he contributed to the industry as a judge and instructor on the senior citizen singing talent show, Golden Age Talentime.

Despite his health struggles, Ling Xiao initially tried to manage his condition positively, using acupuncture and other treatments. However, he eventually felt too weak to continue and told his sister that he did not want to “start all over again like a child.” His family and medical team provided care at home during his final days, helping him stay comfortable as his condition worsened.

Ling Xiao’s wake is being held at Block 116A Bukit Merah Central, and he will be cremated at Mandai Crematorium on the morning of December 17. His passing has saddened many fans and colleagues in the local entertainment community, who remember him for his talent, charm, and contributions to music and television over more than five decades.
