Tagawa was born in Tokyo but spent most of his early life in the southern United States because his father served in the U.S. Army. He also lived in Hawaii, including Honolulu and the island of Kauai. His parents named him after famous Hollywood actors Cary Grant and Gregory Peck. Although his mother had been a stage actor in Japan, she advised him not to pursue acting because there were very few meaningful roles for Asian actors at that time.

Before entering the entertainment industry, Tagawa worked many different jobs. He was a celery farmer, limo driver, pizza supply truck driver, and even a photojournalist. He finally began his acting career at the age of 36. His first major breakthrough came in 1987 when he appeared in the Oscar-winning film The Last Emperor. Over the years, he acted in several well-known movies, such as Pearl Harbor, Planet of the Apes, and License to Kill.
In addition to acting, Tagawa had a strong interest in martial arts. Although he trained in several forms, he was not interested in fighting or competition. Instead, he created a system called Ninjah Sportz, which used martial arts as a method of fitness and healing. He worked with professional athletes, including boxing champion Brian Viloria, and also advised the University of Hawaii football team.

His lawyer said he accepted responsibility for the incident. Still, throughout his life, Tagawa remained respected for his dedication to acting and for helping bring more visibility to Asian performers in Hollywood. His death marks the loss of a talented and influential figure in the world of entertainment.
