Cropper was not a flashy guitarist, but his clean, sharp, and memorable guitar lines made him a legend. He was a key member of Booker T. and the M.G.’s, a racially integrated band that became the backbone of Stax Records. Together, they created classic hits like “Green Onions,” “Hang ’Em High,” and “Time Is Tight.” Cropper also co-wrote major soul hits such as “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay,” “In the Midnight Hour,” and “Soul Man.” Famous musicians admired him deeply even Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards once called him “perfect.”

Born in Missouri and raised in Memphis, Cropper discovered his love for music early. He bought his first guitar at 14 and was inspired by artists like Chuck Berry and Chet Atkins. He joined Stax Records when it was still known as Satellite Records, and his early band, the Mar-Keys, gave him his first hit with “Last Night.” Over time, he became not only a guitarist, but also a songwriter, producer, and key creative force behind many soul classics.
Cropper’s partnership with legendary singer Otis Redding was especially meaningful. Together, they wrote “Dock of the Bay,” which became Redding’s biggest hit after his tragic death in 1967. Cropper finished the song while grieving, and it became one of the most memorable soul tracks in history. His thoughtful approach to music, always listening to others and playing to support the song made him unique.
