Kristin Chenoweth and Stephen Schwartz Perform Powerful Queen of Versailles Song on Late Show

Kristin Chenoweth and composer Stephen Schwartz recently appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to perform a powerful song from their new Broadway musical, The Queen of Versailles. Chenoweth sang the Act One finale, “This Is Not the Way,” with Schwartz accompanying her on piano. The performance highlighted their long friendship and creative partnership, which began years ago when Chenoweth starred in Schwartz’s hit musical Wicked. Their reunion brought excitement to fans who have been following their latest project closely.

The Queen of Versailles began previews on October 8 at the St. James Theatre and officially opened on November 9. However, the production has announced that it will close on January 4, 2026. The musical is adapted from Lauren Greenfield’s 2012 documentary and tells the dramatic story of Jackie and David Siegel. The couple sets out to build the largest private home in the United States, but their dream falls apart when the 2008 financial crisis hits. The song Chenoweth performed captures the emotional moment when they realize their lives are about to change.

In the show, Kristin Chenoweth stars as Jackie Siegel, while Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham plays David Siegel. Many cast members from last year’s pre-Broadway tryout have returned, including Melody Butiu, Stephen DeRosa, Greg Hildreth, Isabel Keating, and Nina White. Broadway favorite Sherie Rene Scott will also play Jackie Siegel during select performances. With a strong ensemble and well-known leads, the production has gathered significant attention for its music and storytelling.

The musical is directed by two-time Tony winner Michael Arden and features an impressive creative team. The choreography is by Lauren Yalango-Grant and Christopher Cree Grant, with scenic design by Dane Laffrey and costume design by fashion designer Christian Cowan. Lighting, sound, wigs, and orchestrations are handled by award-winning Broadway professionals. Together, they bring the Siegels’ grand and troubled world to life on stage.
