Holly Wheeler’s Growing Role Connects ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 to Its Emotional Season 1 Roots

Holly Wheeler Brings Stranger Things Season 5 Full Circle

Stranger Things Season 5 gives Holly Wheeler, the youngest member of the Wheeler family, her most important storyline yet. Holly has appeared since Season 1, but in the new season she becomes central to the mystery of Hawkins. The show opens with Holly talking to an invisible “imaginary friend” at home and later at school. Her brother Mike tries to comfort her, reminding her to be brave when facing the strange events happening in their town.

The creators, the Duffer Brothers, explained that they wanted the final season to feel connected to the show’s early days. Since the original cast is now older, they needed younger characters to bring back the Season 1 energy. Holly became the perfect choice because she has always been close to the supernatural events, even if she did not fully understand them as a child. To deepen her story, the writers connected her experiences to the famous book A Wrinkle in Time, which Holly reads and uses to make sense of the strange things around her.

As the story unfolds, Holly’s imaginary friend “Mr. Whatsit,” inspired by the book’s character Mrs. Whatsit, turns out to be Vecna in his human form, Henry Creel. He tricks Holly by acting kind and gentle, making her feel safe. Actor Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays Vecna, described Henry’s behavior as warm on the outside but deeply disturbing inside. He also explained that Henry sees Holly as intelligent and believes that if he can manipulate her, controlling others will be easier.

Holly’s larger involvement also connects past seasons. In earlier episodes of the show, she sensed supernatural dangers, like the lights in Joyce’s house or the presence of the Mind Flayer. Now, in Season 5, she finally steps into the center of the story. Showrunners said they enjoyed seeing young actors on set again because it reminded them of the excitement of making the first season.

Throughout the season, Holly uses ideas from A Wrinkle in Time like the dark world of Camazotz to understand the Upside Down. These book references also help the audience follow the show’s more complex mythology. With Volume 2 releasing on December 25, fans will soon discover how Holly’s journey connects to the final battle in Hawkins.
