Malaysian rapper Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, has been released on police bail while authorities continue investigating the death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh. The 42-year-old artist was granted bail on Thursday (Nov 13), according to a statement by Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus. The investigation is still ongoing, and officers are waiting for the official autopsy report before making further decisions.
Namewee Released on Bail Amid Iris Hsieh Probe
Police said that Namewee will remain out on bail until Nov 26, after which the case will be reviewed again. The police chief also explained that the investigation papers had already been sent to the prosecutor earlier in the day. Once the autopsy results are available, the papers will be forwarded again to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further instructions.
Malaysia’s Attorney-General, Dusuki Mokhtar, shared on Wednesday (Nov 12) that there is no evidence at the moment linking Namewee directly to Iris Hsieh’s death. This has led authorities to allow him temporary release while they continue their work. The case has attracted widespread attention online, as both Namewee and Iris Hsieh are well-known public figures in Malaysia and Taiwan.

The situation began on Oct 22, when Namewee was arrested at a hotel after police discovered nine pills suspected to be ecstasy. On Nov 3, he was officially charged with drug use and possession. On the same day, Iris Hsieh was found dead in a hotel bathtub. Her death was initially treated as sudden, but on Nov 4, the case was reclassified as murder, prompting Namewee to turn himself in the following day for questioning.
