Actress and singer Taylor Momsen has revealed the real reason why she left the hit TV show Gossip Girl. In a recent interview on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, Taylor shared how difficult it was to walk away from her role as Jenny Humphrey, despite the show’s huge success. She explained that her true passion was always music, and continuing the series was making her unhappy.
Taylor Momsen Opens Up About Leaving Gossip Girl
Taylor Momsen said that she wanted to leave the show early, but it was not an easy process. She was under a contract with Warner Bros. Television, and when she asked to quit, some studio executives called her “ungrateful.” They felt she should not turn her back on something that had made her famous. Taylor recalled that it became a “long battle” for her to convince them that she needed to move on and follow her dreams.
When the studio wouldn’t release her, Taylor Momsen turned to the show’s creators, Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, for help. They understood her situation and decided to write her character out of the story instead. This allowed Taylor to leave Gossip Girl after season four and start touring with her rock band, The Pretty Reckless. She later thanked the showrunners for giving her that chance, saying they didn’t have to do it but chose to support her dream.
Taylor also shared that her co-stars were surprised when she suddenly stopped appearing on the show. She said she was already working on her first album during filming and often played her songs for them, but many didn’t realize how serious she was about becoming a musician. After leaving the show in 2010, Taylor focused completely on her music and found success with her band, which continues to perform around the world.

Even though she left Gossip Girl, Taylor returned for the series finale in 2012 to give fans a proper goodbye. She said she wanted to be part of the final episode because, as a TV fan herself, she believes viewers deserve to see all the characters come together one last time. Taylor’s story shows how difficult it can be to leave fame behind but also how powerful it is to follow your passion.
