Actress Debra Messing, best known for her role in Will & Grace, has faced strong criticism after posting a controversial political meme on Election Day. The 57-year-old Emmy-winning actress shared an image on her Instagram Story that called Zohran Mamdani, a New York City mayoral candidate, a “jihadist.” The meme came from an account called The Persian Jewess and compared two candidates, labeling one as “a Democrat” and the other as “an actual communist jihadist.”

The original post encouraged New Yorkers to vote for Andrew Cuomo and used hashtags like #ZohranMamdani, describing the race as “a battle for Democracy itself.” Many social media users reacted negatively to Messing’s decision to repost the meme, calling it offensive and misleading. One user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “I think Zohran has actually broken her brain,” while another called Messing’s actions “scary and disturbing.” Writer Carey O’Donnell even described her behavior as “psychopathic.”

Debra Messing has not yet responded publicly to the backlash, and Entertainment Weekly confirmed that both her and Mamdani’s representatives were contacted for comment. Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old Democratic candidate, is the son of filmmaker Mira Nair, known for movies like Queen of Katwe and Mississippi Masala. If elected, Mamdani would make history as New York City’s first Muslim and Indian American mayor, as well as one of its youngest leaders in generations.
The mayoral race has been heated, drawing attention from across the political spectrum. Former President Donald Trump even commented on it, saying he would rather vote for a “bad Democrat” than a “communist.” Meanwhile, Mamdani has defended his campaign, saying he represents “the people of this city” and emphasizing that his focus is on community issues, not political labels.

Despite the controversy, Mamdani continues to gain recognition and support from figures like New York Governor Kathy Hochul. However, public reactions to Debra Messing’s post show how social media can quickly turn political during elections. The incident has sparked a broader discussion about the responsibility of celebrities when using their platforms especially during such important democratic moments.
