Karur stampede victim’s wife returns ₹20-lakh compensation, upset Vijay didn’t visit personally

A woman from Karur, Tamil Nadu, has returned the ₹20-lakh compensation that actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay gave to the families of victims of the Karur stampede. Her husband was one of the 41 people who died during the tragic event last month. The woman, named Shankavi Perumal, said she was deeply hurt because Vijay did not visit her personally in Karur to offer his condolences.

Instead of visiting the victims’ families in their hometowns, Vijay invited them to a private resort in Mamallapuram to meet and share his grief. Shankavi said she had expected him to come to Karur and speak directly to the affected families. She also mentioned that some local TVK members took her husband’s relatives to meet Vijay in Mamallapuram without her knowledge. Feeling disappointed, she decided to return the entire ₹20 lakh amount that had been transferred to her bank account a week earlier.

According to reports, Shankavi returned the money through Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS). She also submitted a written letter to the bank, authorizing the transaction. Interestingly, she returned the amount on the same day Vijay met the other bereaved families in Mamallapuram. Her action surprised many people, including her husband’s close relative, Balu, who said local politicians might have influenced her decision.

Earlier, Vijay had spoken to the families through a video call, expressing his sorrow and assuring them that he would meet them soon. Later, he transferred ₹20 lakh each to the bank accounts of all 41 victims’ families. The gesture was widely appreciated at first, but Shankavi’s decision to return the money has sparked a debate about how public figures should show empathy during such tragic times.

The Karur stampede tragedy shocked Tamil Nadu and led to calls for stricter safety measures at political events. The Madras High Court has also asked the State government to create a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for large political meetings and rallies within ten days to prevent such accidents in the future. Meanwhile, Shankavi’s emotional decision has drawn attention to the importance of personal compassion over monetary compensation.
