Gulshan Devaiah Says South Films Succeed Because Bollywood Focuses on Packaging, Not Real Casting

Actor Gulshan Devaiah, known for his strong performances in films like Hunterrr and Badhaai Do, recently shared his honest opinion about the ongoing South vs Bollywood debate. He spoke about this topic while discussing his role as King Kulashekhara in Kantara: Chapter 1, which has become a major hit across India.

Gulshan Devaiah Critiques Bollywood Casting Practices

In his conversation, Gulshan Devaiah explained why South Indian cinema is performing better than Bollywood in recent years. He said that filmmakers in the South focus more on casting the right actor for the right role, while in Bollywood, many films are made like “packages” — built around stars, not characters. According to him, this difference affects the film’s authenticity and emotional impact.

Gulshan Devaiah shared, “In the Hindi film industry, a lot of projects are packaged. Actors are not always cast as per the character’s needs.” He added that in South Indian films, directors like Rishab Shetty, who made Kantara: Chapter 1, cast their films with real dedication and understanding of the story.

He recalled his own experience from the 2011 film Force. Gulshan said he wanted to audition for the villain’s role after watching the original Tamil version Kaakha Kaakha, but he didn’t get it because the character required a specific physical appearance that suited Vidyut Jammwal better. “That was the right casting decision,” he admitted. “Between me and Vidyut, only he could have done that role.”

Gulshan believes that when filmmakers cast actors based on their real suitability and not just popularity, the film connects better with the audience. He said this is one of the main reasons why many South Indian films like Kantara, Pushpa, and Kalki 2898 AD are loved across India, while some big Bollywood projects fail despite having star power.
