The music world mourns the loss of legendary R&B singer D’Angelo, who passed away at the age of 51 after a prolonged battle with cancer. Born Michael Eugene Archer in South Richmond, Virginia, D’Angelo was a pioneer of the neo-soul genre and became famous for hits like “Brown Sugar,” “Lady,” and “Untitled (How Does It Feel?).” His family confirmed the sad news in a statement, describing him as a “shining star” whose music leaves a lasting legacy.

D’Angelo began his musical journey at a very young age, learning piano at three and performing in church alongside his father, a Pentecostal minister. He started performing in local groups during his teenage years and signed with EMI Records in 1993. His debut album, Brown Sugar (1995), became an instant hit, spending over a year on the Billboard 200 chart and introducing the world to his unique blend of classic R&B and hip-hop influences. This album played a key role in the mid-1990s neo-soul movement, alongside artists like Maxwell and Erykah Badu.

His second album, Voodoo (2000), created with the Soulquarians collective, was another milestone in modern R&B. It featured collaborations with Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, Roy Hargrove, and J Dilla. The album’s hit single, “Untitled (How Does It Feel),” and its video made D’Angelo a global star, though he often felt uncomfortable with the fame and attention it brought. Despite personal challenges, including legal troubles and long periods away from the public eye, he continued to create music that pushed artistic boundaries.

In 2014, D’Angelo returned with Black Messiah, an album that showcased his growth as an artist while maintaining the signature neo-soul sound. He followed this release with live performances, including a memorable show at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. Even in recent years, he contributed to projects like Red Dead Redemption 2’s soundtrack and collaborated with Jay-Z on the 2024 single “I Want You Forever.”
