Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is back in the spotlight with his new movie ‘Bandar’, starring Bobby Deol. The film recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and has sparked discussions and mixed reactions. Some critics have labeled it as “provocative” and connected it to the #MeToo movement, while others called it “anti-MeToo” or “pro-men.” Kashyap has now clarified the matter, saying the film has nothing to do with #MeToo.
Anurag Kashyap Clarifies ‘Bandar’ #MeToo Controversy
In an interview, Kashyap explained that the story is about a false rape accusation case. He said, “#MeToo is about power and someone using their position to harm another person. This film does not deal with that kind of powerplay, so it is not related to MeToo.” He emphasized that the controversy is a misunderstanding and that the film should be viewed in the context of its story.
Kashyap also spoke about the making of the film. He entrusted the script to Sudip Sharma, as the subject was very complex and required careful handling. “I didn’t have the time to write the script myself. Only if Sudip agreed to write it, I would direct the film. Fortunately, he agreed,” Kashyap said.
This movie also marks the first collaboration between Anurag Kashyap and Bobby Deol. Kashyap described Bobby as the perfect choice for the lead role, saying, “The story is about a has-been. Bobby understands what failure means because he has experienced it and come back stronger. He completely surrendered to the role, which made him ideal for the film.”
After its TIFF premiere, ‘Bandar’ continues to generate buzz internationally. Audiences are eager to see the film, especially amid ongoing discussions about its theme. Kashyap’s clarification assures viewers that the movie focuses on its unique story rather than any social movement or controversy.
