Namit Malhotra, the producer of the upcoming two-part Ramayana film, has opened up about the challenges and vision behind one of India’s most ambitious cinema projects. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the movie features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana. It is expected to be one of the biggest productions in Indian film history.
Ramayana Producer Unsure About Film Budget
Reports earlier suggested that the project could cost around ₹4,000 crore. However, Malhotra explained that he himself does not know the final budget. Speaking on a podcast, he revealed that when the film began, even the actors asked him whether he had enough funds to complete such a massive project. He said that Part 1 is almost finished, and surprisingly, he has not taken a single loan for it. “I don’t know how the money is coming in. Even I cannot explain it. This is something beyond calculations,” he shared.
Malhotra also said that he does not believe star salaries alone are harming the film industry. According to him, stars demand high fees only when the project is built entirely around them. If the story, vision, and quality are strong, then even the biggest stars can see the film’s larger potential.

The producer added that Ramayana is not just another business project but a passion-driven mission. His company DNEG, which has earlier won several Academy Awards for visual effects in films like Inception, Interstellar, and Dune, is handling the film’s technical side. Malhotra believes that Ramayana is even tougher than any Hollywood movie they have worked on so far.
The movie also features Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, and Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, among others. Music is being composed by A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer, marking Zimmer’s first project in Indian cinema.

Malhotra is confident that with projects like Ramayana, Indian films can reach a much bigger international audience, just like Hollywood blockbusters do today. He said the aim is to present the story with world-class quality so that it appeals to audiences everywhere. Part 1 of Ramayana is expected to release in Diwali 2026, followed by Part 2 in 2027.
