Well-known Kannada playwright, actor, and director Yashwanth Sardeshpande passed away in Bengaluru on Monday at the age of 60. According to his family, he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest at a private hospital. He is survived by his wife Malati, who is also an actor, and their daughter.

Yashwanth Sardeshpande was born in Ukkali village of Vijayapura district and studied in Hubballi. Before entering theatre, he worked as an apprentice at Kirloskar company in Harihar and later at the KSRTC depot. His passion for acting eventually took him to Ninasam, a famous theatre institute in Heggodu, where he completed a diploma in theatre.
His early years were filled with struggle, but he soon started directing plays and radio dramas for All India Radio and Doordarshan. While working at the South Central Zone Cultural Centre in Nagpur, he met theatre artiste Malati, whom he married in 1991. Yashwanth also attended scriptwriting and theatre administration courses at New York University, further sharpening his skills.

He gained popularity with his comedy play All The Best, which was a Kannada adaptation of a Marathi play. The play became a massive hit, running for more than 500 shows across the world. Following its success, he staged other popular comedies such as Sahit Ree Sahi and Dil Maange More. His monodrama Rashi Chakra was also widely appreciated.
Apart from theatre, Yashwanth contributed to Kannada cinema and television. He was praised for his dialogues in the North Karnataka dialect in the film Rama Shama Bhama, starring Kamal Haasan and Ramesh Aravind. He also directed the Kannada comedy film Idea Madyaara… Nagalikke. Though the film did not perform well at the box office, it reflected his love for humour and storytelling.

Yashwanth also worked to promote theatre by setting up a theatre school and auditorium in Hubballi. Just a day before his passing, he had announced a new play Kolalu.com(edy), in which he was preparing to share the stage with flautist Praveen Godkhindi. The play was scheduled to premiere in Bengaluru on October 18.
