The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to actress Sanjana Galrani regarding a drug-related case in Karnataka. The state government filed a plea challenging the quashing of proceedings against her in a 2020 case. The case involves allegations of procuring and distributing drugs at parties in Bengaluru.
SC Notices Sanjana Galrani Over Drug Case
The case originally came up in a special court under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, along with charges under Section 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for criminal conspiracy. In 2024, the Karnataka High Court quashed the proceedings on a technical ground, citing Section 219 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which limits multiple trials for more than three offences in a 12-month period.

The Karnataka government has now approached the Supreme Court, arguing that narcotics crimes are serious offences that harm society. According to the state, evidence including call records and forensic assessments of mobile phones shows that Sanjana Galrani was in contact with drug suppliers, including foreign nationals, and distributed drugs such as cocaine, ecstasy, MDMA, LSD, and marijuana at parties. Witnesses and neighbors also claimed that she sold drugs in public places and caused a disturbance in the locality.

During the Supreme Court hearing, the Karnataka government emphasized that the High Court had dismissed the case only on technical grounds, and that drug trafficking must be punished strictly. The court has asked Sanjana Galrani to respond to the plea.
Sanjana Galrani, also known as Archana Galrani, is a popular actress in South Indian cinema. Senior advocate Siddharth Dave represented her during the hearing. The case highlights the growing focus of Indian courts on controlling drug abuse and ensuring accountability for those involved in drug trafficking.
The Supreme Court’s notice is an important step in deciding whether the High Court’s decision to quash the case will be upheld or overturned. The case has drawn attention from media and the public, emphasizing the legal system’s strict stance against drug-related crimes.
