Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound Portrays Struggled Youth Facing Society’s Harsh Reality and Bureaucracy

Neeraj Ghaywan’s latest film, Homebound, tells a powerful story about young people trying to survive in a harsh and indifferent society. The movie is inspired by a real-life story written by journalist Basharat Peer in 2020. It focuses on the struggles of Chandan Kumar (played by Vishal Jethwa) and Mohammed Shoaib (played by Ishaan Khatter), two young men from small towns in India who dream of better lives.

Homebound Highlights Youth Struggles in India

The story begins at a busy railway station where hundreds of young people gather to take a police examination. The crowd and chaos overwhelm Chandan, highlighting the pressure and competition faced by youth today. Ghaywan uses these scenes to show how society often ignores ordinary people who are not born into privilege. While mainstream Hindi cinema often focuses on success stories of students clearing IITs or UPSC exams, Homebound brings attention to those who struggle and fail despite their efforts.

Chandan comes from a Dalit family, with his parents working as laborers and his sister as a school caretaker. For him, a government job is a way out of poverty. Shoaib faces daily discrimination due to his religion, and he hopes a government job will give him respect and security. Both characters face harsh realities and social barriers that remind them of their lower social standing. From bureaucratic humiliation to subtle everyday discrimination, the film shows how difficult life can be for marginalized youth.

The performances of Vishal Jethwa and Ishaan Khatter are remarkable. They bring depth and empathy to their characters, making the audience feel their pain, struggles, and small joys. Ghaywan also casts Janhvi Kapoor in a Dalit role to challenge stereotypes, while Shalini Vatsa, as Chandan’s mother, delivers one of the most memorable moments in the film.

By telling this story, Ghaywan gives a voice to those often forgotten, making Homebound a significant and important film in contemporary Hindi cinema.
