Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently spoke about his conversation with Malayalam actor-director Basil Joseph, sharing interesting insights about Bollywood. The discussion happened at an awards ceremony where the two bumped into each other. Basil Joseph, known for his work in Malayalam cinema, shared his experience of trying to make the Hindi version of the popular superhero show Shaktimaan.
Anurag Kashyap Reveals Basil Joseph’s Struggles
Basil revealed to Anurag Kashyap that he felt he had “wasted two years” working on the Bollywood adaptation. The project, which was supposed to feature Ranveer Singh in the lead role, has been on hold for several years. Basil explained how challenging it was to deal with the egos and complexities of the Hindi film industry. He even asked Anurag how he manages to survive in Bollywood.

Anurag Kashyap admitted that he understood Basil’s struggles well. Over the years, Anurag himself has chosen to work more in regional films and South Indian cinema, instead of fully focusing on Bollywood. He noted that the industry often prioritizes personal egos over talent, which makes it difficult for even experienced filmmakers and actors to succeed smoothly.

Basil Joseph gained attention with his Malayalam film Minnal Murali, which starred Tovino Thomas and became a popular superhero movie in Kerala. Following this, he had plans to make a Hindi adaptation of Shaktimaan, but it did not materialize. Despite the challenges, Basil continues to act and direct in Malayalam and Tamil films. This year, he appeared in movies like Pravinkoodu Shappu, Ponman, and Maranamass. He will also star in Sudha Kongara’s Tamil film Parasakthi, alongside Sivakarthikeyan, Atharvaa, Ravi Mohan, and Sreeleela.
Anurag Kashyap, meanwhile, has continued his work in Indian cinema. His recent film Nishaanchi was released in theatres, and he will also appear in the upcoming film Bandar with Bobby Deol. As an actor, he was last seen in the Malayalam film Rifle Club and will soon star in Telugu and Tamil projects.
