Delhi High Court Protects Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Personality Rights From AI Misuse, Fake Products

The Delhi High Court has given strong protection to Bollywood actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan against the unauthorised use of her image and personality. The order came on September 9, 2025, from Justice Tejas Karia, who made it clear that courts cannot ignore such misuse of a celebrity’s identity.

Delhi HC Protects Aishwarya Rai From AI Misuse

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had filed a plea after discovering that several websites and unknown individuals were using her face and likeness without her permission. Some were even creating AI-generated fake visuals and spreading them online, while others were selling products like T-shirts, mugs, and posters using her name and image. The court noted that this not only causes financial loss to the actor but also harms her privacy and dignity.

Justice Karia explained that a person’s identity and personality cannot be commercially exploited without their consent. He said misuse of a celebrity’s image has two major problems: first, it takes away their right to control how their identity is used for commercial gain; and second, it violates their right to privacy and dignity as an individual.

The court’s interim order has stopped the accused parties from making, sharing, or selling any content that uses Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s name, likeness, or digitally created images. This includes modern digital manipulations such as deepfakes, face morphing, and AI-generated content. The judge stressed that the court has a duty to protect people from such unauthorised exploitation.

The matter is important because the rise of AI and deepfake technology has made it easier to misuse celebrity images. By passing this order, the court has set a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated.

Interestingly, the same court is also handling a similar case filed by Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya’s husband. He too has sought protection against fake videos, manipulated images, and unauthorised use of his persona. Justice Karia has already taken note of his petition and said that an order will be passed soon.

This judgment highlights the growing importance of personality rights in the digital age. For celebrities like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, whose public image is valuable, the misuse of their likeness not only damages their career but also attacks their personal dignity.
