The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards took place in Elmont, New York, but two of the most talked–about stars, Taylor Swift and her fiancé Travis Kelce, were not there. Many fans were hoping to see them walk the red carpet together, but the couple decided to stay away from this year’s show.

Taylor Swift had just one nomination this year Artist of the Year, which was won by Lady Gaga early in the ceremony. Since she was not performing and had only one category, her absence did not come as a big surprise. In fact, Taylor has been stepping back from award shows lately, choosing to spend more time on her personal life and hobbies after wrapping up her massive Eras Tour in December 2024.
In a recent episode of Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast, Taylor shared how she has been enjoying her free time. She said she has rediscovered her old hobbies like painting, sewing, cooking, and baking. At the moment, she is very focused on sourdough bread baking, joking that it has completely taken over her life. Kelce also revealed that it has been fun living together and watching Taylor enjoy these simple activities at home.

Meanwhile, Travis Kelce had his own reason to skip the VMAs. Just two days before the ceremony, the Kansas City Chiefs played a big game against the Los Angeles Chargers in São Paolo, Brazil. Because of his football schedule, it was expected that he would not make it to New York in time.

Looking ahead, 2026 could be a much bigger award season for Taylor. Her upcoming album, The Life of a Showgirl, is set to release on October 3, 2025, which means it will be eligible for major awards next year. Fans can expect her return to the spotlight with new performances and nominations.
For now, both Taylor and Travis seem happy staying away from the cameras and enjoying some quiet time together. While their absence was felt at the VMAs, their supporters know that exciting projects and moments are still to come.
