Aaliyah Kashyap, daughter of filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, recently shared her thoughts on how audiences often fail to support meaningful films in theatres. After the trailer release of her father’s upcoming film Nishaanchi, she took to Instagram to post a long note about the gap between what people say they want and how they actually behave when films release.
Aaliyah Kashyap Urges Support For Good Cinema
Aaliyah Kashyap said she finds it frustrating when people constantly demand “good cinema” but don’t watch such films when they hit the big screen. She pointed out that movies like Dhadak 2 and now Nishaanchi struggle to get audiences into theatres, only to be appreciated years later as “cult classics” or “hidden gems.”
She appealed to the public to watch Nishaanchi in cinemas when it releases on September 19, 2025. According to her, the team has poured love, hard work, and passion into making the film, and good cinema deserves to be recognized at the time of release, not just in hindsight.

Aaliyah also reminded followers that this problem is not new. She mentioned earlier examples like Udaan, Lootera, Lunchbox, Masaan, and October. These critically praised films struggled at the box office during their release, even though they are now celebrated. She explained that when audiences don’t support meaningful films during their theatrical run, it becomes harder for filmmakers to create similar projects in the future.

Nishaanchi is directed by Anurag Kashyap and co-written with Prasoon Mishra and Ranjan Chandel. The movie marks the debut of Aaishvary Thackeray in a double role. It also stars Vedika Pinto, Monika Panwar, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and Kumud Mishra. The film is produced by Ajay Rai and Ranjan Singh under Jar Pictures, in association with Flip Films.
Through her note, Aaliyah Kashyap highlighted an important issue in the film industry: the gap between critical praise and box office performance. Her message is clear: if audiences truly want meaningful and impactful cinema, they need to show up and support such films in theatres when it matters most.
