Eric Ozario, a respected leader in Konkani music and culture, passed away on August 29, 2025, at the age of 76. He had been suffering from kidney-related health issues and had been on dialysis for several years. Eric was receiving treatment at Father Muller’s Hospital for the last 18 days. He is survived by his wife Joyce and children Dr. Rashmi Kiran and Rithesh Kiran. His last rites will be held at Boloor crematorium, with a Mass at St. Vincent Ferrer Church and public viewing at Kalaangann.

Eric Ozario was a pioneer in promoting Konkani language and culture. He devoted his life to music, composing more than a thousand songs and poems, and performing in over 800 programs in India and abroad. He was the founder of Mandd Sobhann, a cultural organization created to preserve and promote Konkani identity through music, theatre, and artistic events. Under his leadership, the organization held more than 2,200 shows and earned a Guinness World Record for its unique contribution to Konkani culture.

He was also a visionary who established Kalaangann – The Konkani Heritage Centre – as a hub for cultural activities. Eric’s dedication to nurturing young talent was clear through the many training programs, workshops, and camps he organized, giving children and youth a platform to explore Konkani art and music. His efforts ensured that the cultural heritage of the community remained alive and thriving.

During his tenure as president of the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, Eric introduced Konkani as a third language in schools and promoted cultural unity among various Konkani-speaking communities. He organized global surveys, awareness campaigns, and conventions to strengthen the identity of Konkani language worldwide. His work extended beyond culture, as he also advocated for workers’ rights and justice for marginalized communities.
Eric’s achievements earned him several honors, including the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award, the title of Vishwa Konkani Kala Ratna, and a Senior Fellowship from India’s Department of Culture. Through his creativity, leadership, and passion, Eric Ozario leaves behind a lasting legacy that will inspire generations to celebrate and protect the Konkani language and culture. His contributions will be remembered forever, and his life remains a guiding light for the Konkani community.
