In a throwback Instagram post, Zeenat Aman shared that she was preparing to leave India with her family in the early 1970s when destiny changed her path. At the time, she had only played a minor role in the film Hulchul, which made little impact. Feeling disappointed, she was packing her bags to move to Malta with her mother and stepfather. But then came Dev Anand, who she now fondly calls her “starmaker.”

Zeenat recalled that O. P. Ralhan, a filmmaker, recommended her name to Dev Anand’s team when they were casting for Hare Rama Hare Krishna. She was only a teenager then and remembered quietly observing everything during her first meeting. Soon after, she was called for a screen test, and to her surprise, she was selected for the iconic role of Jasbir/Janice.

Just when her family was about to move out of the country, Dev Anand convinced her mother to stay back. The team then traveled to Kathmandu for the film’s shooting. Zeenat admitted that she was restless during the long wait before her first scene. But when the moment finally came, she delivered her lines with such eagerness that she still laughs at the memory today.
The film took years to complete, and once again Zeenat’s family thought of relocating. But Dev Anand persuaded them to remain in India, promising that the movie would be released soon. True to his word, Hare Rama Hare Krishna hit theatres and became a huge success. The song Dum Maro Dum turned into a sensation, and Zeenat Aman rose to instant stardom.
Looking back, the actress expressed deep gratitude towards Dev Anand for recognizing her potential and giving her the platform that launched her career. Today, while she often connects with fans through social media, she continues to inspire with her stories, proving that one opportunity can truly change everything.
