Veteran filmmaker Rakesh Roshan recently revealed some interesting behind-the-scenes facts about the making of Krrish, one of India’s most loved superhero films. The director shared that it took almost six months to design the now-famous mask worn by his son, actor Hrithik Roshan, in the film.
Hrithik’s Iconic Krrish Mask Took Six Months
Speaking during a casual conversation with filmmaker Farah Khan at his Khandala home, Roshan explained that the mask was made of wax. Because of this, it would begin to melt after three to four hours of wear under the studio lights. To handle this challenge, the crew kept an air-conditioned bus running 24 hours a day during the shoot. Hrithik had to frequently remove the mask and replace it with a fresh one whenever it melted.

Rakesh Roshan further added that designing the mask was not an easy job. The team spent months testing different versions to make sure it looked good with Hrithik’s black superhero costume. He also shared that the outfit itself was extremely heavy and uncomfortable, which made shooting even more difficult for Hrithik.

Released in 2006, Krrish became a huge box-office success and remains one of India’s most iconic superhero films. It told the story of Krishna Mehra, a young man who inherits superpowers from his father Rohit Mehra (also played by Hrithik) and transforms into the masked hero Krrish. The film also starred Priyanka Chopra, Rekha, and Naseeruddin Shah.
The movie was followed by Krrish 3 in 2013. In April 2025, the makers officially announced Krrish 4, which will not only bring Hrithik back as the superhero but also mark his directorial debut. The film is being produced by Yash Raj Films in collaboration with Rakesh Roshan and is expected to begin shooting early next year.
Rakesh Roshan’s revelations remind fans how much hard work and innovation went into creating Krrish. Despite the challenges of wax masks and heavy costumes, the film succeeded in giving Indian audiences a superhero they could proudly call their own. With Krrish 4 on the horizon, fans are excited to see how the franchise evolves with Hrithik stepping into a dual role of actor and director.
