Veteran actress Usha Nadkarni, best remembered for playing Savita Deshmukh in the popular TV show Pavitra Rishta, recently opened up about her experience with auditions in the film industry. In an interview, she revealed how she once refused to audition for Zoya Akhtar’s 2019 film Gully Boy.
Usha Nadkarni Refuses Audition For Zoya Akhtar
Usha Nadkarni said that throughout her long career, she has rarely been asked to audition. She believes her years of work and acting experience are enough proof of her talent. She recalled that a young assistant once called her and asked her to come for an audition for Gully Boy. She responded by asking his age, and when he said 25, she reminded him that she had been working in films and television even before his mother got married. Usha said she does not believe in “wasting time” on auditions and that directors can easily see her past work by simply searching her name online.

She further shared that when she asked who the director was, she was told it was Zoya Akhtar. Usha then remarked that Zoya is from a film family, the “daughter of a big man,” and should be able to judge her work without an audition. This bold response became a talking point, as it highlighted her confidence and the respect she has earned in the industry.

Usha also recalled working in Akshay Kumar and Ileana D’Cruz’s film Rustom. She said she never auditioned for that role either. She was simply called to the office, told about her character, and was immediately cast. Even though her role was small, she was happy with the process and appreciated that her talent was recognized without an audition.
Talking about Gully Boy, the film went on to become a huge success, earning over ₹235 crore worldwide. Directed by Zoya Akhtar, it starred Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, and Siddhant Chaturvedi. Despite not being a part of the film, Usha Nadkarni remains proud of her choice and stands by her principles.
With decades of work in Hindi and Marathi cinema, along with her television success, Usha Nadkarni has proven herself as one of the most respected senior actors. Her refusal to audition shows her strong belief that experience and talent speak louder than formal tests.
