Veteran Bengali actor Basanti Chatterjee, known for her memorable performances in films, television, and theatre, passed away at her home in Kolkata on August 12, 2025. She was 88 years old and had been battling cancer for a long time.

According to the West Bengal Motion Picture Artists’ Forum, Chatterjee had spent several months in the ICCU of a hospital due to her illness. Later, doctors advised that she be cared for at home under the supervision of nurses. Despite her health struggles, she continued to be admired for her dedication to acting.

Basanti Chatterjee’s career spanned over five decades. She acted in more than 100 films, leaving a lasting mark on Bengali cinema. Some of her notable works include Thagini, Manjari Opera, and Alo. Her talent and versatility earned her appreciation from both critics and audiences.
Apart from films, Chatterjee was also a familiar face on Bengali television. She played important roles in popular serials like Bhutu, Boron, and Durga Durgeshari. Her last appearance on television was in the show Gita LLB. Unfortunately, during the filming of this serial, her health worsened, and she could not continue.

In her younger years, Chatterjee was also active in theatre. She regularly performed in stage plays, adding to her artistic reputation. Her work on stage showed her strong command over acting and her ability to connect with live audiences.
Actor Bhaswar Chatterjee expressed his condolences, saying that she had been in great physical pain in recent times. He added that despite her illness and age, her talent was unique and irreplaceable in the industry.
