Filmmaker Farah Khan recently shared a funny memory about offering a role to legendary actor Kamal Haasan. During a visit to actress Shruti Haasan’s Mumbai home for her cooking vlog, Farah revealed how she had approached Shruti’s father years ago for an important role in her debut film Main Hoon Na opposite Shah Rukh Khan.
Kamal Haasan Declined Villain Role in Main Hoon Na
Farah said Kamal Haasan was her first choice to play the villain, Raghavan Dutta, in the 2004 blockbuster. The role eventually went to Suniel Shetty, but before that, she travelled to Chennai to meet Kamal in his office and narrate the script. She recalled that after hearing the story, Kamal politely told her to “duck off,” which she took in good humour. Farah did not mention the reason he turned it down.

Main Hoon Na was Farah Khan’s directorial debut and went on to become a huge hit. The film starred Shah Rukh Khan, Zayed Khan, Sushmita Sen, Amrita Rao, and Suniel Shetty. The story followed Major Ram Prasad Sharma, played by Shah Rukh, who goes undercover as a college student to protect a general’s daughter while also trying to reconnect with his half-brother. The film was made for ₹25 crore and earned ₹70.40 crore worldwide. Its mix of action, comedy, romance, and hit songs made it a fan favourite.

Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan has been busy with new projects. He was last seen in Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, which marked their reunion after 37 years. Although it did not match the success of their 1987 classic Nayakan, it still drew attention, earning ₹97.25 crore globally. Kamal will next appear in Indian 3, directed by S Shankar, which is currently in production. The release date has not been announced yet.
Farah’s light-hearted story shows how even big names in the industry sometimes pass on roles that later become iconic. She still looks back at the moment with laughter, proving that in Bollywood, behind-the-scenes tales can be just as entertaining as the movies themselves.
