Sanjeev Kumar and Hema Malini's Love Story Ended Due to a Heartbreaking Family Condition

Sanjeev Kumar was one of the most talented and respected actors in Bollywood. Known for his serious and emotional roles, he won the hearts of millions. But while his professional life was full of success, his personal life was filled with sadness especially his love story with the “Dream Girl” of Bollywood, Hema Malini.

Sanjeev Kumar-Hema Malini Love Story Ends Sadly

Their relationship began during the shooting of the 1972 film Seeta Aur Geeta. While filming a skating scene for the song Hawa Ke Saath Saath in Mahabaleshwar, they both narrowly escaped a life-threatening accident. This experience brought them closer emotionally, and love slowly started blooming between the two stars.

Sanjeev Kumar later sent his family to Madras (now Chennai) to formally propose to Hema Malini’s mother, Jaya Chakravarthy. Initially, everything went smoothly. But problems started when Sanjeev’s family made a condition that Hema must quit acting after marriage and become a stay-at-home wife. Jaya Chakravarthy, a strong supporter of Hema’s career, rejected this condition immediately.

Sanjeev hoped Hema would choose love over films. Hema, on the other hand, wished Sanjeev would understand her dreams and ambitions. But neither side was willing to compromise. Eventually, the relationship ended.

Years later, Hema Malini revealed in an interview that Sanjeev wanted a traditional wife who would take care of his mother and leave her film career. She said this was a common expectation in that era, but she wasn’t ready to give up her passion for cinema.

Hema went on to marry Dharmendra in 1980 and had two daughters. Sanjeev Kumar, however, never married and passed away at the young age of 47.

This tragic love story remains one of Bollywood’s most emotional chapters, showing how love sometimes fails not because of lack of feelings, but due to timing, beliefs, and expectations.
