Actor Tom Glynn-Carney, who plays King Aegon II Targaryen in House of the Dragon, recently revealed that Season 3 will show a big change in his character. In the upcoming season, Aegon will begin a journey of self-discovery. He will start to understand himself better after the painful events of Season 2.
Aegon’s Self-Discovery Begins in Season 3 Journey
The new season began filming in the UK in March 2025 and is expected to finish by October. Due to heavy post-production work, the release might not happen until mid-2026. HBO has not confirmed any official date yet.

According to Tom Glynn-Carney, Aegon is no longer just the careless king we saw before. After being badly injured in the battle of Rook’s Rest, he becomes more thoughtful. He begins asking deep questions about his life, actions, and choices. This change doesn’t mean he becomes a hero, but we’ll see him try to understand why he behaved the way he did.
The show’s writers are not planning a “redemption arc” for Aegon. Instead, they want the viewers to understand his motivations while still remembering his past actions. He was responsible for many deaths and harsh decisions. The show wants to keep the story morally complex, just like in George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood.

The third season will include major battles, including the Battle of the Gullet. Many cast members like Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, and Olivia Cooke will return, along with new characters yet to be revealed.
The main theme of Season 3 will be how Aegon deals with his guilt and pain. At the same time, Rhaenyra’s character will also grow more intense. The show will not make anyone look like a complete hero or villain, keeping the balance between the Greens and the Blacks.
