Director Hwang Dong-hyuk shared why Cate was chosen for the role. He said they wanted a woman to bring a fresh and dramatic change to the story. He believed Cate’s powerful screen presence and acting skills were perfect for the short but important scene. “She only had a few words, but she made a strong impact,” the director said.

In the final scene, the mysterious Front Man is shown in a car in Los Angeles. As he waits at a red light, he hears the familiar sound of ddakji – the Korean game where players try to flip paper tiles. When he looks outside, he sees Cate Blanchett’s character playing ddakji with a desperate man in an alley. They exchange a brief look before he drives away, and she turns back to her new recruit, who wants to play again.
This scene shows that even after all the efforts to stop the Squid Game, it is still happening in secret places around the world. The cameo adds a powerful message – that some games never really end.

The show’s lead actor, Lee Byung-hun, said the ending was very fitting for the story. He explained that even though some people tried to fight against the system, the world continues on the same dark path.
