Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan recently shared why his blockbuster movie Dangal was never released in Pakistan. While talking on the popular show Aap Ki Adalat, he revealed that the Pakistan censor board had placed conditions that he could not accept.
Aamir Khan Refused Dangal Release in Pakistan
Aamir explained that Dangal was made with a lot of heart and pride. The film celebrates India and the achievements of Indian wrestler Geeta Phogat. In the movie, there is a powerful scene where the Indian national flag is raised, and the national anthem is played after Geeta wins an important wrestling match.

However, when the film was ready to be released internationally, the Pakistan censor board told Disney, one of the producers, to remove the scene showing the Indian flag and the national anthem. They said the film could only be shown in Pakistan if those scenes were removed.
Aamir Khan immediately refused. He said that if someone asked him to remove the Indian flag and anthem, then he had no interest in doing business with them. Even though the decision meant losing money from the Pakistani market, he said his pride in the country was more important than profit.

He also spoke about his earlier film Sarfarosh, which was one of the first Indian movies to directly mention Pakistan and terrorist groups like ISIS. At that time, he had received negative feedback from across the border, but he stood by the film’s content.
Dangal, which was released in 2016, became one of the biggest hits in Indian cinema. It earned over ₹2,000 crore globally, with huge success in China. Aamir played the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat, the father and coach of champion wrestlers Geeta and Babita Phogat.
Currently, Aamir Khan is working on a new movie titled Sitaare Zameen Par, which is said to be a spiritual sequel to his emotional film Taare Zameen Par. The new movie also stars Genelia D’Souza and is set to release in theatres on June 21, 2025.
