The shooting happened after an argument between Ceja and Joss. Ceja fled the scene but was caught just one block away from where the incident took place. The case has drawn significant attention because Joss’s husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, stated that the attack was motivated by homophobia. Earlier this year, their home in San Antonio was destroyed by a fire, which also killed their pet dogs. The fire came after more than two years of receiving threats from people in the neighborhood who said they would burn their house. Tristan mentioned that they reported these threats to the police multiple times, but no action was taken.
On the day of the shooting, Jonathan Joss and Tristan had returned to the site of their burned home to collect a victim’s fund check. While there, they found the remains of one of their dogs and were grieving. During this emotional moment, a man approached them, shouted violent homophobic slurs, and then fired a gun. Jonathan bravely pushed Tristan out of the way, saving his life but losing his own in the process.
