This controversy brought together politicians from different parties, which is rare. Both Congress and BJP agreed that Kamal Haasan’s comment was wrong and hurt the feelings of Kannadigas (people from Karnataka). Pro-Kannada groups and cultural activists also demanded that Kamal Haasan apologize or clarify his statement.

Kamal Haasan’s comment came during a film promotion event in Chennai, where he spoke about the relationship between Tamil and Kannada languages. He also said that people should first learn the language of the neighboring state before worrying about Hindi. Some people feel his comments were meant to create controversy and division between the Tamil and Kannada communities.
