Who is Banu Mushtaq, the First Kannada Writer to Win the International Booker Prize 2025?

Banu Mushtaq, a 77-year-old writer from Karnataka, has made history by becoming the first Kannada author to win the International Booker Prize. This major achievement has brought global recognition not only to her but also to the Kannada language and Indian literature as a whole. Her award-winning book, Heart Lamp, is a collection of 12 short stories that focuses on the lives of Muslim women in Karnataka. These stories cover a period of over 30 years, from 1990 to 2023, and show the day-to-day struggles, hopes, and voices of women who are often ignored in mainstream literature.

Banu Mushtaq’s writing career began early. She wrote her first short story in school, and by the age of 26, her work was published in a popular Kannada magazine. Over the years, she has written six short story collections, one novel, one essay collection, and one book of poetry. Her work is deeply inspired by her experiences and the social movements she saw growing up—such as the Dalit movement, women’s rights struggles, the farmers’ movement, and environmental activism in Karnataka.

With this award, Banu Mushtaq joins a prestigious list of Indian writers like Arundhati Roy, Salman Rushdie, Kiran Desai, and Geetanjali Shree who have been recognised by the Booker Prize committee. Her win is a proud moment for Kannada literature and for the voices of Indian women everywhere.
