Tamil superstar Suriya’s latest movie Retro has made a strong start at the box office. The film was released on May 1 and earned ₹19.25 crores on its first day across India. Suriya’s ‘Retro’ Opens with ₹19.25 Crores
Retro is directed by Karthik Subbaraj and was one of the most awaited movies of the year. Fans were eager to see Suriya in a fresh role, especially after the disappointing performance of Kanguva. In Retro, Suriya plays Paarivel Kannan, a gangster who has left his criminal life behind. The story follows him as he travels to the Andaman Islands to find his love, but his past soon catches up with him through his gangster father.
The film has received mixed reactions from critics and viewers. While some people appreciated the director’s unique style and bold storytelling, others felt the film had too many elements and a weak second half. The Hindu’s review mentioned that the middle part of the movie was underwhelming, but overall, it praised the filmmaker for trying something different.
The film had high occupancy in many theatres, with Dindigul leading at 92.25% and Chennai following closely with 87.25%. Trichy and Mumbai also recorded good footfall, both at 90.25%. These numbers show that the movie has caught the attention of the audience, especially in Tamil-speaking regions.
