India Suspends Pakistan's Official X Account and Key Diplomatic Ties After Pahalgam Attack

India and Pakistan have reached a new low in their long-standing tensions after a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, a popular tourist area in Jammu and Kashmir. On April 23, militants opened fire at three different locations, killing twenty-six people, including one Nepali national. The Indian government holds Pakistan responsible for supporting the attackers and has announced several strong retaliatory steps.

In a significant move, India has blocked access to the official X account of the Government of Pakistan within its borders. This digital sanction comes alongside more traditional diplomatic actions decided by India’s Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Committee met immediately after the attack and agreed on measures aimed squarely at Pakistan.

First, both countries will reduce the staff at their high commissions. From May 1, the Indian and Pakistani diplomatic missions in each other’s capitals will operate with only thirty officials instead of the usual fifty-five. India has also declared all defence, naval, and air advisors at the Pakistani High Commission persona non grata. They must leave India within one week. In response, India will recall its own military advisors from Islamabad.

India has further suspended the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani citizens, cancelling all existing visas granted under this arrangement. The only land border crossing at Attari has been ordered closed, though Pakistani nationals with valid documents may return home by May 1.

Perhaps the most dramatic decision is the suspension of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, a cornerstone of water sharing between the two countries. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that the treaty will remain on hold until Pakistan proves it no longer supports cross‑border terror.
