Smita Singh on Subverting Horror Tropes in Khauf with Realistic, Suspenseful Storytelling Approach

Smita Singh, the writer and creator of the new Amazon Prime Video show Khauf, wanted to break away from the usual horror genre tropes. Many horror films, especially those with female characters, often follow the pattern of “scared girls running around,” a concept that Smita did not want to be part of her show. In an interview, she explained how the horror genre tends to rely on this stereotypical imagery, where women scream and run away from danger. Smita, who calls herself a rationalist, knew that for her horror series to stand out, it had to be different.

Smita Singh Redefines Horror Tropes in Khauf

When Smita first started working on Khauf, she was clear about her vision. She didn’t want to create a show where the characters were simply frightened and helpless. Instead, she aimed to offer something more profound, blending psychological drama and horror. The challenge was to portray the paranormal in a way that felt grounded and real, something that would not rely on the usual, predictable horror elements.

The result is a show that offers suspense and psychological depth rather than relying on cheap thrills. The show subverts traditional horror tropes and explores what makes a person survive through terror. Smita reflected on this by saying that, as a rational person, it was essential to think about how to tell ghost stories in a way that would be different from the norm.
