Robert Eggers Reveals Why He Will Never Make Modern-Day Movies With Technology and Cars

Robert Eggers Rejects Modern Films

Robert Eggers, the director of the upcoming horror film Nosferatu, has a unique approach to filmmaking. He is known for creating movies set in historical periods, such as The Witch (2015), The Lighthouse (2019), and The Northman (2022). Recently, Eggers revealed that he has no interest in making modern-day movies featuring cars, cellphones, or contemporary technology.

In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Eggers explained that the thought of filming modern inventions like cars and mobile phones makes him feel uncomfortable. He stated, “The idea of having to photograph a car makes me ill. A cellphone is just death.” According to him, modern technology is an essential part of everyday life, and capturing it in a film does not align with his artistic vision.

Eggers has always been drawn to historical settings. His films often explore dark themes in past centuries, from the 1630s to the Viking Age. He finds inspiration in the past and prefers to create movies that transport audiences to different time periods. He mentioned that if he ever directed a film set in modern times, it would likely not go beyond the 1950s, as anything beyond World War II feels less appealing to him.

Eggers’ next project, Werewulf, is set in 13th-century England and is co-written with Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón. Additionally, reports suggest that he may also direct a sequel to the 1986 fantasy film Labyrinth.
