James Denton, best known for his role as Mike Delfino on Desperate Housewives, recently shared his unique perspective on one of the show’s most heartbreaking moments. In a candid interview, he revealed that filming the episode where his character dies was his favorite experience from the show.

In season 8, episode 16, Mike Delfino is tragically killed in a drive-by shooting while protecting his wife, Susan Mayer, played by Teri Hatcher. Denton described the scene as intense and emotional, but also exciting to shoot. “It’s always fun to get chills on camera,” he said, recalling the special effects and precise planning required to execute the sequence.

The actor explained the technical details behind the dramatic scene. A tubing system carried fake blood to his chest, while a detonator created the effect of gunshots. Due to the complexity of the setup, they could only shoot the scene a few times.

Denton also praised Teri Hatcher’s powerful performance during Mike’s final moments. “She was sobbing uncontrollably all day long,” he said, adding that her dedication made it challenging for him not to cry as well.

Reflecting on the show’s legacy, Denton noted the surprising number of characters killed throughout its run. “We joked about who would get killed next. The show was known for its drama and surprises,” he said.

Despite the somber nature of Mike’s death, Denton said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience, calling it one of the highlights of his acting career. His reflections remind fans of the emotional depth and storytelling that made Desperate Housewives an unforgettable series.
