Director James Mangold recently discussed the making of A Complete Unknown, a biopic on legendary musician Bob Dylan. The film stars Timothée Chalamet as the iconic singer and explores Dylan’s early journey to fame.

Mangold shared that the film blends real events with fictional elements to create a compelling narrative. “We didn’t want to make a pseudo-documentary,” he said, explaining how the team avoided a typical documentary style and focused on storytelling.

The movie captures Dylan’s arrival in New York City, where he meets his hero Woody Guthrie (played by Scoot McNairy) and legendary folk singer Pete Seeger (Edward Norton). These encounters shape Dylan’s path in the music world.
The film also highlights Dylan’s rise in the folk music scene, his collaboration with Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro), and his shift to electric music, which brought him immense fame but also stirred controversy.
To create the film, the team used archival footage, letters, and Mangold’s interviews with Dylan. While some scenes feature imagined dialogues, others include Dylan’s actual words, such as his statement from a 1962 interview: “I’m not saying I’m a folk singer. I mean, I do sing folk songs, but not exactly.”
Mangold explained that the movie balances fact and fiction to bring Dylan’s story to life. It portrays not just his music career but also his personal growth and relationships.
